Sermon Text

John 18:33-37

Help me as the morn is breaking

 In the spirit to arise,

So from careless sloth awaking,

That, when o'er the aged skies

Shall the Judgment Day appear,

I may see it without fear.

(H. Albert.  Gott des Himmels und der Erden.  1644)

This Sunday is the last Sunday of the church year.  It is called "Christ the King" Sunday.  You will notice that this is the theme of the readings and of the hymns today.  It is also, of course, the theme of the sermon.  The Old Testament reading today from Daniel 7:13,14 lets you see the king through the eyes of Daniel and his nighttime vision.  The Ancient of Days is God the Father.  Notice the purview of the King in these verses of Daniel.  The Second Lesson is from last book of the Bible, Revelation 1:4b-8.  It certainly describes our King too.  Notice the words "who is and who was and who is to come."  Notice that this is the complete scope of time.  There isn’t any other time.  This is it.  This is all time.  Our King Jesus is eternal.  The Gospel for this day is from John 18:33-37.  It will serve as the sermon text too.  Jesus doesn’t look much like the King here.  Pilate couldn’t see it even though Jesus admitted to it.  Notice where Jesus’ Kingdom is.  It is not a kingdom of this world and earth.  It is a heavenly kingdom.  This knowledge helps us to know what to expect in the earthly kingdom of God’s churches and what to anticipate in the heavenly Kingdom of his Christ and of his Lord.

SPECIAL THANKS — Special thanks to Dennis Falk for leading the Bible study and for presenting the sermon today.  Thanks also to Matt Stump for his help in the liturgy and service.  God has blessed our congregation with good leaders.  Thank you for supporting them today with your presence.

BAKE SALE TODAY — Don’t forget the bake sale today.  This is the very last matching fund raiser from Thrivent.

ELECTIONS COMING — This is the first of three official announcements regarding the upcoming congregational voters meeting and election on December 6th.

There is choir practice today.

COMMUNION SCHEDULE — The Lord’s Supper will be celebrated this coming Sunday, November 29.  We will continue in December with the Lord’s Supper on the 13th, the 27th and the 31st.

THANKSGIVING EVE SERVICE — Thanksgiving Eve service will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.  There will be no service on Thanksgiving Day so that you may enjoy your friends and family.

POTLUCK NEXT SUNDAY — Next Sunday there will be potluck.  Please check the sign-up sheet for things to bring.  Enjoy the fellowship.

PASTOR RETURNS NEXT WEEK — Pastor Hartzell returns from Arizona on Tuesday.  He is preaching at Lakeside, Arizona this morning in his parents and family’s congregation.  He has been having fun hiking in the mountains, cutting firewood, and visiting with his family.  Delora was there too earlier this week.

In Pastor Hartzell’s absence, anyone needing pastoral service before Wednesday should contact Pastor Don Patterson of Holy Word.  Pastor Patterson’s cell phone number is: 784 5429.  We thank Pastor Patterson performing this service to our congregation.

MID-WEEK ADVENT SERVICES — December 2nd is the first of our Advent Services.  This service will be speaking about our Hope.  We worship at 7:30 PM.  Please set aside these Wednesday evenings in December for special preparation for Christmas.

The Georgetown Christmas Stroll takes place on December 5.  We will have a booth again this year.  We need people (young and old, men and women, husbands and wives) to tend the booth.  This is not difficult.  You can do it.  It means giving people who stop by some of our printed materials…or just being friendly to them and giving them a bottle of water.  You are asked to sign up for an hour at a time.  This will not impact your day very much and it would greatly help us get the word out about our church.  Please sign up.  Please help us.
