ABOUT THE SERVICE TODAY
This is the seventh Sunday after Pentecost. The Old Testament reading for today
is from the Prophet Ezekiel. This reading will serve as the sermon text too. This
tells us how Ezekiel got his call, his sending into the work. It also tells us the
nature of Ezekiel’s hearers. God called them stubborn and rebellious. There are
elements of these two bad characteristics in God’s peoples’ lives. God keep us all
from these bad habits. The second reading is from 2 Corinthians 12:7-10. Read here
about Paul’s “thorn in the flesh.” You may suppose you have such a thorn (or thorns!)
in your lives. But whatever you suppose and whatever is the case, know that God’s
grace is enough for you too. His power is perfected in our weakness. And it is
true that we want to say, “For when I am weak, I am strong.” Jesus makes it possible
for us to have this strength in our lives. The Gospel reading from Mark 6:1-6 tells
us trouble Jesus had in his call to be prophet to the people. This is the sad account
that shows that familiarity does breed contempt. Jesus wasn’t free from this either.
The people who lived around him---even the people of his own family---“took offense
at him.” Isn’t that something? Just think what it says! People can be offended
at God himself! Small wonder that once in a while Christians end up offending people
with their preaching of God’s law and his Gospel. People were offended at Jesus
"FIVE STEPS TO HEAVEN"
VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL THIS WEEK
Don’t forget that Vacation Bible School starts tomorrow morning at 9:00. The sessions
run from 9:00-12:00.
The theme for VBS will be "Five Steps To Heaven." If children come for the five
days they will be able to know how to get to heaven even if they knew nothing else
coming into the Bible school.
Everything is ready. The projects, food, lessons, registration…have all been done
or are ready. Pray for us that we might have good attendance and that the children
and workers will benefit spiritually and get closer to the Lord. Pray that the messages
relating the five steps to heaven be as effective as God’s Word is effective and
that our children learn something that will stand them in good stead all their lives.
For VBS students and all our members
There will be a picnic on Friday evening at 6:00 for all the participants of the
Vacation Bible School and for all members of our congregation who would like to come.
Please come and enjoy grilled hot dogs and the fixings. There will also be watermelon,
compliments of Marvin Mueller’s garden.
VIALS OF INCENSE — Please remember your prayer list this morning. Thank you.
WEDNESDAY BIBLE CLASS — On Wednesday evening for Bible study we will be continuing
our study of Luther’s Large Catechism…the Creed. The Creed is the concise statement
we make about our God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We are going to be studying
about God the Holy Spirit in the Third Article of The Apostles Creed.
THURSDAY BIBLE CLASS — As previously stated, there will be no Bible study on Thursday
morning of this week because of Vacation Bible School. We will resume the class
next week…same time. Come to church on Thursday anyway and sit in on the children’s
class if you like.
