JULY 12, 2009

This is the sixth Sunday after Pentecost.  All three readings today would serve as wonderful texts for sermons.  All three are especially familiar and important to us in our Christian lives.  The reading from Lamentations gives you a glimpse into your Father’s heart.  When hard and bad things happen to you, you can see how he feels and what he does.  Go to this place when adversity strikes you…and be comforted and encouraged.  You will be!  The second lesson is from 2 Corinthians 8:1-9, 13,14.  This reading invites you to look into your own heart and see what kind of love for your Savior you see there.  God so loved the world that he gave!  Love gives.  Always.  That really is all these words about Christian giving are saying to us all.  If there is no giving in our loving, something is terribly wrong.  Love for Jesus always comes before your offering clears your finger tips at the time the offering plate is passed by you.  Believe that!  Enjoy that!  Love that!  And the Gospel reading for today is from Mark 5 and it tells of Jesus helping a man whose daughter had just died.  Only Jesus could help.  At the time of death today, only Jesus can help.  He still is the only one.  This reading from Mark will be our sermon theme as we consider the words Jesus spoke here, "Don’t be afraid, just believe."

THANKS TO OUR WORKERS — Thanks to those who helped with the church cleaning yesterday.  Thank you!  Our church looks good for Vacation Bible School.

MEETING IN SAN ANTONIO — Pastor Hartzell will go to San Antonio to study with the pastors in the Capital Circuit tomorrow.  He should be back in town mid-afternoon.

VIALS OF INCENSE — Please remember your prayer list this morning.  Thank you.

CHURCH COUNCIL MEETS TUESDAY  — Church Council meets at 7:30 on Tuesday evening.

Registration this Thursday and Saturday

Please continue to think about Vacation Bible School.  This Tuesday evening at 6:00 we are going to have a planning meeting of the ladies who are going to be helping.  Ladies, please come with your suggestions and ideas.

The basic structure of this year’s VBS is: classes from 9-12; registration on Thursday, July 16 and Saturday, July 18, from 3:00-6:00 P.M.  We are asking all parents to pre-register their children so we will know how to prepare and so that we will also have the ability to have parents sign a disclaimer form to release our church from liability in the case of an accident or something else.

The theme for VBS will be "FIVE STEPS TO HEAVEN."  If children come for the five days they will be able to know how to get to heaven…even if they knew nothing else coming into the Bible school.

On Friday evening of VBS week, there will be a picnic for all at 6:00.  We would welcome all our church members to come on Friday evening and join us in eating hot dogs and the fixings.

WEDNESDAY BIBLE CLASS — On Wednesday evening for Bible study we will be continuing our study of Luther’s Large Catechism…the Creed.  The Creed is the concise statement we make about our God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.  We are going to be studying about God the Son…Jesus.  We will see his nature and his work.

THURSDAY BIBLE CLASS — There will be Bible study this Thursday morning at 10:00.  We will continue our study of Genesis and the story of Joseph and Jacob and his sons in Egypt.  Just a reminder:  next week, July 23rd there won’t be Thursday morning Bible study because of Vacation Bible School.  Come anyway and sit in on the children’s class if you like.
